The Finnish Way

Beer is not just a drink.
It is a ritual.

In Finland, brewing is inseparable from culture. Long before written history, Finns were crafting sahti — a rustic farmhouse ale made with juniper, malted rye and bog myrtle, filtered through straw.

Today, Finland's craft beer scene is one of the most vibrant in Northern Europe. More than 100 small breweries produce ales, stouts and lagers that reflect the landscape: clean, cold, honest and deeply satisfying.

What makes Finnish beer unique?
Pure glacial water — Finland has some of the cleanest water on Earth, giving beers exceptional clarity
Juniper & bog myrtle — ancient herbal bittering agents used before hops arrived in the north
Rye & oats — locally grown grains add earthy, complex character to traditional styles
Sauna culture — beer and sauna are inseparable in Finnish life; a cold ale after steam is sacred

Through the Ages

A history poured

~3000 BC
The First Brews
Archaeological evidence suggests fermented grain beverages were produced in Finland during the Bronze Age. The Kalevala, Finland's national epic, contains 40 verses dedicated to the creation of beer — more than the creation of the world itself.
1800s
Industrial Brewing Begins
Finland's first commercial breweries open in Helsinki and Turku. German brewing techniques arrive, introducing lager fermentation. Beer becomes central to Finnish working-class culture.
1919
Prohibition Years
Finland enacts total alcohol prohibition. Home brewing surges, and the tradition of sahti survives precisely because it was made in farmhouses, beyond the reach of authorities.
1995
EU Entry & Craft Revolution
Finland joins the European Union. Regulations change, small breweries multiply. A new generation of Finnish brewers begins experimenting with local ingredients and international styles.
Today
The Golden Age of Finnish Craft
Over 100 craft breweries now operate across Finland. Finnish beers win international awards. The ancient sahti tradition is recognized by the EU as protected cultural heritage.
"Beer is the most modest of drinks — it asks for nothing but an honest thirst and good company around a fire."
